Note: If Acrobat or Reader is installed in a different location than the default path, make sure that the key's (Default) value points to the actual location.
If you're a webmaster or have administrative rights to a website, ensure that PDF files on that website can be viewed by configuring the web server to send content-type headers of 'application/pdf' for PDF files. For instructions, see the documentation that came with the web server,
Coach Leather, or see article 305153 on the Microsoft website at
9. View the PDF in a 32-bit version of Internet Explorer, not a 64-bit version
Issue
Determine if your web browser can open the PDF from your local hard drive rather than from the web:
2. Open a local copy of a PDF in the web browser
9. Optimize large PDF files
Choose Start > Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open textbox, and then click OK to open the Add Or Remove Programs dialog box.
Select Change Or Remove Programs in the Add Or Remove Programs dialog box, select DreamFactory Runtime for Netscape, Mozilla and Firefox, and click Change/Remove.
Click OK in the Remove Programs From Your Computer dialog box.
2. Repair Adobe Reader or Acrobat
Go to Start > Run.
Type regedit and click OK.
Browse to the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe.
Make sure that the (Default) value is set for the path where Acrobat or Reader is installed.
The default path for Reader is "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe".
The default path for Acrobat is "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\Acrobat.exe".
3. Make sure that AdobePDF.dll is enabled (Internet Explorer only)Select Tools > Internet Options.
Click the Programs tab.
Click the Manage Add-ons button.
Set the Show menu to "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer."
Find and select Adobe PDF Reader. If you don't find this item in the list, reinstall Reader or Acrobat.
Make sure that Enable is selected.
Click OK.
4. Make sure that nppdf32.dll is enabled (Firefox only)In the Firefox address bar, type: about:plugins
Scroll down to a section named Adobe Acrobat.
File Name should read "nppdf32.dll" and "Adobe Acrobat Plug-In Version 7.00 for Netscape."
If this entry is not available, use solution 7 above to reinstall the latest version of Reader or Acrobat.
5. Configure Acrobat or Reader as a helper application.
In Firefox, select Tools > Clear Private Data.
Deselect all options except Cache.
Click Clear Private Data Now.
5. Deselect and then reselect the Display PDF In Browser preferenceIn Adobe Reader or Acrobat, choose Edit > Preferences.
Select Internet.
Deselect Display PDF In Browser, and then click OK.
Choose Edit > Preferences > Internet, select Display PDF In Browser, and then click OK.
6. Try a different web site
4. Delete temporary Internet files (Internet Explorer and Firefox)
Try to view a PDF file located on a different web site (a different web server). For example, try to view the Acrobat Help PDF file from the Adobe website at help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/acrobat_X_pro_help.pdf. The Adobe web server is configured to let browsers open PDF files. If Acrobat or Adobe Reader can display PDF files from the Adobe website, the other website's server could be configured incorrectly. It's also likely that its server software don't support page-at-a-time downloading. Contact that server's webmaster for assistance.
In your web browser, choose File > Open (or Open File).
Choose All Files from the Files Of Type pop-up menu (Windows)
Click Browse
Select a PDF file you have saved previously, and then click Open to open the PDF file. If Acrobat or Adobe Reader displays the file but doesn't display it on the web, the web server has a problem serving the PDF file. Contact the webmaster of the site from which you downloaded the PDF file.
3. Download the PDF again
Sometimes restarting can resolve common issues.
Always use the latest version of Adobe Reader or Acrobat. Before you install an update or upgrade, make sure that the system meets the requirements.
The Quick Launch toolbar
The desktop
The Start menu
A hyperlink or a file type associated with Internet Explorer
This problem can occur for the following reasons:
Try to download the PDF again from the website. If the PDF was sent to you, try having the person send it to you again.
7. Check the registry path for Acrobat or Reader
Back to top
A blank page in the web browser
A broken object link (for example, a red square, a blue triangle, or a blue circle)
A red X icon
Error: "The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running cannot be used to view PDF files in a web browser. Adobe Acrobat/Reader version 8 or 9 is required. Please exit and try again."
Create a user account that has the same permissions as the account you use when the problem occurs. Or create a local administrator account. If the problem doesn't recur when you log on to the new account, then the original user account could be damaged.
If you receive the error "Cannot use Adobe Reader to view PDFs in your web browser" when you try to view a PDF in Firefox, do the following:
In Internet Explorer, delete the temporary files that Internet Explorer creates:
Choose Start > Run.
Type appwiz.cpl in the Open textbox, and then click OK to open the Add Or Remove Programs dialog box.
Select Acrobat or Adobe Reader, and then click Change/Remove (Windows 2000, Windows XP) or Change (Windows Vista, Windows 7).
In the Setup dialog box, click Next.
Select Repair, and then Click Next.
Click Update.
When the process is complete,
Coach Leather, click Finish.

In Internet Explorer, select Tools > Internet Options.
Click Delete Files in the General tab, and then click OK when prompted.
To repair Adobe Reader or Acrobat, you must have access to the installation media (CD-ROM or DVD) or to the network path from which you originally installed the product.
If the PDF file is 4 MB or larger, ask the provider to optimize the PDF file. For information about optimizing PDF files, see Enable Fast Web View in a PDF in Acrobat X (Professional or Standard) Help.
If the above registry item doesn't exist on the system, do the following:
Restart your computer and try opening the PDF again
Open a local copy of a PDF in the web browser
Download the PDF again
Delete temporary Internet files
Deselect and then reselect the Display PDF In Browser preference
Try a different web site
Install the latest version of Adobe Reader or Acrobat
Remove all previous versions of Adobe Reader or Acrobat, then reinstall
View the PDF in a 32-bit version of the web browser
1. Restart your computer and try opening the PDF again
With Acrobat or Reader configured as a helper application, the browser starts the helper application in a separate window and displays PDFs within that window.
10. Change the content-type header on the web server
Choose Start > Run, type regedit in the Open text field of the Run dialog box, and then click OK.
Back up your current Registry file: In the Registry Editor dialog box, choose File > Export.

Right-click AcroExch.Document and select Delete; make sure you have the correct key, and click Yes on any prompts.
Right-click AcroExch.Document.7 and select Delete; make sure you have the correct key, and click Yes on any prompts.
Repair your Acrobat or Reader installation using solution 2 above.
It is possible that this key is damaged, is pointing to an obsolete version of Acrobat or Reader, or is pointing to a third-party PDF viewer.
