Wedding Dresses 1940s Barbara Kendall-Davies is the little girl on the right of this picture of the wartime wedding of Minnie (Cis) Kendall to George Smith. "It was 1942. I have vague recollections of the white satin dress I wore," recalls Barbara, 73, who lives on Jersey with husband, Christopher, also 73. "I'm standing in front of my mother - Dad was at war in Dunkirk. Minnie was my father's sister.fdhrtyrtuytuihjk "She didn't marry until she was 29, late for a woman in those days, which could explain why she isn't wearing a traditional gown - brides were considered young women. "Or it could've been a question of clothing coupons - a wedding dress had limited use but day clothes could be worn again." The wedding took place in Birmingham, most likely in a register office near Aston Villa football ground, near where Minnie's father lived.
Wedding Dresses1950s Sarah Williams, 52, from Faversham, Kent, lost both her parents Patricia and Anthony Hyne - pictured here on their wedding day on September 11, 1954 - last year. Patricia was attended by friends Jean and Joyce and she and Anthony honeymooned in Rye, East Sussex. "Mum and Dad met when they worked for the gas board," explains Sarah. "I can't imagine there was much money for an expensive gown. She looked lovely, though."

I don't know what it cost but the smallest size was a 10 and as I only weighed 6st 4lbs it must've been Charlotte, 14, taken in a lot! My granddaughters and Olivia, 10, tried it on the other day!" Bridesmaid Patricia wore a typically 60s dress and the younger bridesmaid and pageboy had a tartan sash and kilt as Christine's mother was Scottish. The couple flew to London on honeymoon. "The gentlemen's hats are almost gangster-like!" The wedding took place at All Saints', Leeds, with a reception at the Ivy House Co-operative Society. The papers came through on a Wednesday and we went straight to Chelmsford Register Office and booked our wedding for 9.25am the following Saturday," says Jenny. "I bought this dress for £50. It was very of its time, very 'new romantic'. The hat was from Debenhams or John Lewis. Roger already had the suit but when he got it out it was covered in mould so we were frantically brushing it!" After the wedding, attended only by 1980s parents and siblings, Jenny cooked bacon and egg washed down with buck's fizz.
