How important is a great wedding ring...

A question I wanted to ask. Guys, do you believe it is expected to go all out and spend a huge pile of $ on an engagement ring to impress your girlfriend?   
   
 Girls, does the amount spent on the ring actually increase how much love you feel for your man?     
     
I dont have a gigantic amount to spend but the ring I bought for my love the other day she said was to small so that sucked and now I don't know what to do. So, what's your opinion?
